Guided Site Tours 4th May 2024, announced
The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is continuing to progress proposals to bring forward new development at Sir John Moore Barracks – a site which is proposed to be allocated within Winchester City Council’s Draft Local Plan (Policy W2) to deliver significant residential led development.
Due to the site’s active military use, public access to the site is prohibited. Nevertheless, we understand that for many local residents seeing the site in person would be beneficial in understanding the context and site constraints for when the DIO are able to publish their draft Concept plans for consultation later in the summer 2024.
Ahead of the third stage of our four-stage consultation programme, we will be holding a day of guided walking tours around the site throughout Saturday 4th May, providing an opportunity to view key buildings and existing landmarks across the site.
Taking place at six two-hour timeslots throughout the day, the tours will cover key locations across the main built-up area of the site, including the officers’ mess, chapel and sports complex.
Please note: Due to the nature of the site, a significant part of the tour is only accessible on foot. We would therefore be grateful if the team could be made aware of any accessibility requirements ahead of the event. As the route will span at least 2.9km, much of which will take place outdoors, appropriate footwear and attire is strongly encouraged.

Over the coming months, we will be undertaking a comprehensive and transparent three stage consultation programme, reviewing all feedback received throughout, and where possible, incorporating this into the final proposals prior to submitting an application to Winchester City Council.
